Good But Not SK’s Best

Most of the interesting action occurs in the 1st 3rd of the story. Entertaining and unusual characters are unveiled in a “Cat and Mouse” theme and the roles are constantly reversing leading to page turning to find out what happens next. Once the major premise is revealed the book becomes more narrowly focused in somewhat of a computer/digital age struggle between the heroes and the villains.

Smoothly written. I loved reading both sides of Hodges and the villain. Watching the two sides individual stories until they collided was an excellent way to tell the story.

My first non supernatural King book. I did enjoy it but I confess I was disturbed by the villains warped mind. I’m used to King’s evil menaces being actual monsters instead of monstrous people. I like them better when they are imaginary. Anyway the protagonist balances out the sane storyline well enough so as not to make me toss it into my trash bin. As a detective novel goes, it’s a good read. As a Stephen King book, mehhh.

This has got to be the biggest waste of time I’ve ever read. It’s incredibly predictable, dragged out, and sounds like it was written by a twelve year old boy when it comes to detective Hodges and janey’s relationship. I was so bored while reading it that I resorted to skimming just so I could finish it.

So exciting!!!!!

I finished reading this book at 1:30 a.m. and still can’t sleep after an hour so I’m here writing this review. LOVE those long and detailed background stories about main characters’ personality development, though I know many people might get bored reading them. The ending was awesome, I became so nervous and engaged after they break into Brady’s house lol.

Oh my goodness... this book was awesome. I had to stop multiple times just because I couldn’t handle what was about to happen. I seriously grew attached to the characters (the good ones) and loathed the bad ones. I just suggest you read this book. VERY well written. 👏🏼

Horrible!

I thought I'd try the reading something for the "great" Stephen King for the first time...I ended up only making it to chapter 13. I just cannot handle anymore of this garbage. There was 4 pages describing what was going on Jerry Springer. 4 pages! The entire 70 pages I forced myself to endure are full of worthless information. Save your money, time, & sanity with this one.

Starts slowly and picks up speed until you are barreling through it (like an out-of-control Mercedes?) Not like a traditional mystery in which you are on the detective's view throughout, here you see the plot unfolding from both the protagonist's and antagonist's view simultaneously, watching as events conspire to undo them both.

This book is one of Stephen King's usual unusual fascinating fantasies . I always feel so like An amazed 6 year old. I know it is fiction but I wonder "why"? As a psychiatrist I talk with people who are such good people who are not any different than us "normal" people . We all believe some things that if everyone knew we believed they would politely ask us to get in their car and take us to the the place my little Sis calls,"the bin"! Peaceful place where the people not "bin mates"are called professionals. Now who do you think has more fun? The "bin mates" of course! Please Mr King keep it coming! Your constant reader! Do not be fooled by the intro, that it the best part of the book; it only goes downhill from there. Very boring middle section with not much plot ending with the worst ending ever. I can't believe Stephen King wrote this... His worst I've ever read.

Needlessly crass and vulgar (and I don't have virgin ears) in a way that's gratuitous and stupid rather than impactful or operative, which is what bothers me about it. Also it's a little too dark even for King. I think king has developed a strange obsession with a level of human ugliness that only exists in his own head. Used to be a huge fan of his work. Lately reading his stuff is like taking a trip down a very dark tunnel that's just too creepy and strange to be entertaining. Also you get his typical insertions of his left leaning politics and social opinions which are clearly not thought out which again leads me to believe that he lives in his own head and not in the real world where human life actually happens. Done with this book and done with the author.

I Miss The Characters Tremendously!

I enjoyed the book immensely. But now I feel myself missing Bill, Holly and Jerome - not in a weird way either. I've hundreds of books, probably more in the thousands (including almost everything Stephen King has a written, except those pesky westerns; I just can't wrap my head around those). I'm usually happily satisfied with each book's conclusion, and equally happy when I become engrossed in the next book I choose to read. But these 3 characters, your average, run-of-the-mill people, have stuck with me for some reason. I find myself wondering about what the future holds for each of them. This, I feel is the hallmark of a great author. Thank you Mr. King!

I have never read a detective novel by Stephen King,so I cannot compare it to anything else. I thought that the plot was clever and inventive, but that his protagonist is no Sam Spade or Phillip Marlowe. What the book lacks is the terse dialogue that would make it a noir classic. Instead we get a lot of homey and pat witticisms Snappy comebacks could have made this more interesting
